Nei documenti del XV secolo la proprietà è ricordata col nome di Castellazzo ed è costituita da un rustico su due piani, contornato da una vigna, da un prato e da un ricco frutteto con noci, castani ed altre piante.
Nel Cinquecento la zona viene denominata in seguito “Grumello“.
Negli anni 1570-80, la villa viene ricostruita dal banchiere milanese Tommaso d’Adda e diviene una delle prime residenze suburbane del patriziato comasco sulle rive del Lario, amata per la vista incantevole e per la posizione privilegiata. Era anche fornita di un acquedotto indipendente che alimentava la villa e una fontana del parco.
Nel Seicento la villa divenne di proprietà della famiglia Odescalchi che la rinnovarono radicalmente per i loro grandiosi ricevimenti. Poi passò ai Giovio, una famiglia locale, che vi ospitò numerose personalità di spicco. Nel 1870, la villa dopo vari interventi di restauro ed ampliamenti, passò alla famiglia Celesia.
Nel 1954 la Contessa Giulia Celesia Cays di Caselette dona la Villa – con il suo parco e le strutture annesse – all’Ospedale Sant’Anna di Como, lasciando le opere d’arte e gli arredi in essa custoditi al Museo Civico di Como.
La Villa diviene casa di riposo, poi, dal 1970 e fino al 2000 ospita l’ufficio stile delle seterie Ratti.
Nel 2006, dopo alcuni anni di abbandono, su impulso della Camera di Commercio di Como si costituisce l’Associazione Villa del Grumello, che avvia il restauro della Villa, al fine di darle una nuova collocazione nella vita culturale della città, come sede di iniziative culturali, imprenditoriali, scientifiche e di formazione.
In the documents of the fifteenth century, the property is remembered by the name of Castellazzo and consists of a rustic two floors, surrounded by a vineyard, a lawn and an orchard rich with walnuts, chestnuts and other plants.
