La villa oggi conosciuta come Villa Cademartori, apparteneva ad una delle più celebri famiglie di editori italiani, la famiglia Artaria. Originari di Blevio, i membri della famiglia si sono tramandati l’attività di commercianti di stampe e di editori dagli inizi del Settecento per circa tre secoli di generazioni. La loro fortuna crebbe su due rami famigliari, quello austro-germanico e quello Italiano.
La ditta viennese “Artaria & C.” fu quella che ebbe maggiore rinomanza, avviatasi nella pubblicazione di vedute di città, ritratti, carte geografiche e dal 1776 come stamperia musicale. Divenne anche il luogo di ritrovo di tutti gli artisti e dei più celebrati compositori dell’epoca. Edite da Artaria sono le opere di Gluck, Haydn, Mozart, Clementi, Rossini, Schubert, Czemy, Legnam e anche di Beethoven.
Invece il ramo italiano degli Artaria, si stabilì a Milano e portò un contributo notevole alla storia editoriale dell’Ottocento. Fondatore della casa di Milano fu Ferdinando nato a Blevio nel 1781 e morto ivi il 25 giugno 1843, a lui si deve il maggior contributo di aver portato in tutto il mondo le vedute lariane.
L’attività della casa Artaria si concluse nel 1932, ma i molti libri dell’epoca si possono ancora ammirare le sue bellissime produzioni di carte geografiche, guide per viaggiatori, vedute di città e di località d’interesse turistico, stampe varie e spartiti musicali.
