Villa Erba nel 2000 fu scelta dalla regista olandese Marleen Gorris, come set per il film La partita – La difesa di Lužin tratto dall’omonimo romanzo di Nabokov Zashchita Luzhina del 1930.
La storia, interamente ambientata alla fine degli anni Venti, ruoto intorno ad un grande ed elegante albergo per l’appunto Villa Erba, n cui avrà sede del campionato mondiale di scacchi. La sfida più accesa è quella tra un campione italiano e il geniale giocatore russo Lužin, interpretato da John Turturro. Lužin è un uomo giovane immerso nella passione per gli scacchi, che improvvisamente si innamora d’una ragazza russa incontrata in albergo. La ragazza, che la famiglia vorrebbe destinata a un aristocratico, è sedotta dall’originalità e dal genio di Lužin e si ripropone di cambiarlo, ovvero di riportare la sua ossessione alla normalità.
Numerose sono le scene in cui Villa Erba ne crea l’ambientazione perfetta, come l’ingresso del genio nel salone oppure i suoi scorci sul Lago di Como.

The story, set entirely in the late twenties, it rotates around a large, elegant hotel precisely Villa Erba, n of the headquarters of the World Chess Championship. The most burning challenge is between an Italian champion and the brilliant Russian player Luzhin, played by John Turturro. Luzhin is a young man immersed in the passion for chess, who suddenly falls in love of a Russian girl met at the hotel. The girl, the family would like to set to an aristocrat, is seduced by the originality and the genius Luzhin and intends to change it, or to bring back his obsession to normal.
There are many scenes in which Villa Erba creates the perfect setting, as the genius of the entrance in the lounge or her views of Lake Como.
