La fonte su cui sorge la Villa Pliniana fu descritta nella Naturalis Historia da Plinio il vecchio:
«Ti ho portato in luogo di un piccolo dono dal mio paese natale un problema degno di codesta tua scienza profondissima. Nasce dalla montagna una sorgente, discende attraverso le rocce, si raccoglie in un piccolo vano atto a pranzavi, tagliato a mano dall’uomo. Dopo essersi un po’ trattenuta cade nel lago Lario. Ha una strana natura: tre volte al giorno si innalza e si abbassa per determinati crescimenti e diminuzioni. Forse che una corrente d’aria più nascosta ora apre l’apertura e i canali della sorgente e ora li chiude (…) »
Mentre Plinio il Giovane in una lettera indirizzata a Lucio Licinio Sura tra il 23 ed il 79 d.C. (presente su una parete del loggiato) descrive un momento molto particolare, cioè quando si poteva effettivamente banchettare ai margini della fonte, e attingere con le coppe l’acqua della fonte e bere durante questi piacevoli banchetti.
La villa non era ancora presente, ma il luogo era già noto per il luogo ameno in cui si mangiava e beveva dalla fonte.
Fu proprio da loro e dalle loro testimonianze che la villa prese il nome di Pliniana.
The source on which stands the Villa Pliniana was described in Naturalis Historia by Pliny the Elder:
«I brought in place of a small gift from my hometown a problem worthy of your profound science. Born from a mountain spring, descends through the rocks, is collected in a small room designed to remind me, hand cut by man. After a bit ‘withheld falls into Lake Lario. It has a strange nature: three times a day rises and lowers to certain crescimenti and decreases. Maybe that an air current more hidden now opens the opening and the channels of the source and now closes them (…)»
While Pliny the Younger in a letter addressed to Lucius Licinius Sura between 23 and 79 AD, (found on a wall of the gallery) describes a very special moment, that is when you could actually feast on the edge of the source, and tap into the cups with water from the spring and drink during these pleasant banquets.
The villa was not present, but the place was already known for pleasant place where you ate and drank from the fountain.
It was from them and from their testimonies that the villa was called Plinian.
