La famiglia dei banchieri Amsick di origine amburghese trasferita poi in terra americana, alla fine dell’800, comprò diverse proprietà nell’incantevole angolo di San Giovanni. Il progetto della loro villa prevedeva l’abbattimento di alcune case, uno o due setifici, e tre ville affacciate a lago. Per questo motivo a San Giovanni è famoso il detto dialettale “l’è rua l’Asmick cunt i so can e l’ha distruct mezz San Giuan” (è arrivato l’Amsick con i suoi cani e ha distrutto mezzo San Giovanni).
Invece per creare il bellissimo giardino venne coperto il corso del torrente del Crotto, che si trovava a sud del paese.
