Nel 1983, con l’intento di rilanciare il settore manifatturiero locale, si propose la costruzione di un centro espositivo nel parco di Villa Erba. L’idea inizialmente fu molto dibattuta e polemizzata a causa delle conseguenze che avrebbe creato al patrimonio naturale e artistico della villa. Il progetto fu dunque affidato all’architetto Mario Bellini che propose una costruzione molto articolata basata su tre bracci di lunghezza e altezza differenti che si snodano tra i secolari alberi della villa. Al fulcro dei tre bracci era previsto un ampio salone circolare coperto da una bellissima cupola vetrata con strutture in acciaio. Inoltre la struttura è del tutto improntata all’integrazione con il parco circostante mediante la possibilità di apertura delle pareti vetrate. L’ispirazione di Bellini fu quella di riproporre una serra nuova ma con lo stile tipico del Lago di Como. Le costruzione fu realizzata sotto la guida dell’ingegnere Luigi Antonietti ed il 7 ottobre del 1990 il centro espositivo di Villa Erba fu inaugurato al pubblico.
In 1983, with the intent to revive the local manufacturing sector, was proposed the construction of an exhibition center in the park of Villa Erba. The idea initially was much debated because of the consequences that would have caused the natural and artistic heritage of the villa. The project was therefore given to the architect Mario Bellini who proposed building a highly structured based on three arms of different length and height that wind through the ancient trees of the villa. The fulcrum of the three arms was expected a large circular room covered by beautiful stained glass dome with steel structures. Furthermore, the structure is entirely geared to integration with the surrounding park with the possibility of opening glass walls. The inspiration of Bellini was to propose a new greenhouse but with the typical style of Lake Como. The construction was carried out under the guidance of the engineer Luigi Antonietti and 7 October 1990, the exhibition center of Villa Erba was opened to the public.
