La scultura – tra i capolavori di Antonio Canova – raffigura il celebre eroe greco, inventore di alcune lettere dell’alfabeto e del gioco degli scacchi. Esposta nello studio romano dell’artista venne gravemente danneggiata da una esondazione del Tevere, tanto da dover essere restaurata dallo stesso Canova.
L’opera giunta a Tremezzo nel 1819 venne collocata in una stanza d’angolo, con quinte di specchi per poter esaltare la perfezione in ogni sua parte.
